Volunteers sought by police

Wanaka police are seeking volunteers to join a new community patrol.

Community Constable Mike Thomas said this week police wanted ''community-minded'' people to help prevent crime by acting as ''extra eyes and ears'' for police on Friday and Saturday nights and ''event'' weekends.

Const Thomas said Wanaka police had spoken to Community Patrols of New Zealand, which had 140 patrols working around the country.

''With Wanaka's seasonal influxes, increasing tourist numbers and a concentration of activity in our CBD at night, we considered what approach would be best to help police in our crime prevention activities.

''We thought this would best fit both our community needs and our policing focus.''

A meeting to gauge public interest will be held at the Lake Wanaka Centre at 7pm on March 27.
