Sisters offer Falun Dafa class

Two Invercargill sisters will be offering a free community meditation class in Queenstown this week as part of a tour of the Queenstown Lakes and Southland communities.

Kathryn and Gina Shakespear will be running the Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, class on Thursday from 11am until noon.

Falun Dafa is a spiritual discipline comprising ''moral teachings'', four gentle standing exercises and a sitting meditation.

Gina Shakespear said the practice had helped her become a ''better person inside and out'' and she had noticed an improvement in her health which she attributed to Falun Dafa.

It was introduced to the Chinese in 1992 by Li Hongzhi and within seven years an estimated 100 million people were practising in more than 100 countries.

However, it was banned in 1999 by the Chinese Communist Party and those who practised it were persecuted for their beliefs.

The sisters toured part of the North Island last year holding free classes and were overwhelmed by the response.

The Queenstown class will be held at Earnslaw Park, opposite Alpha Gifts, in Beach St.
