35 sign up for community patrol

Wanaka's first community patrol should be operating by winter.

About 50 people attended a meeting run by Senior Constable Mike Thomas on Thursday night and 35 registered to become patrollers.

Retired senior sergeant Colin Lind, a member of the Dunedin patrol, said patrols were the ''eyes and ears'' for police.

Snr Const Thomas said the next step was to explore funding options.
