Show 'most technical, visually spectacular'

Tickets for the Showbiz Queenstown production of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar are now on sale.

More than 30 Wakatipu performers are cast in the 21st-century reimagining, including Finley Brentwood as Jesus, Paul Halsted as Judas and Lisa Moore as Mary.

The show is billed as ''the most technical and visually spectacular show ever seen on the Queenstown stage'' and is set to play at the Queenstown Memorial Centre from May 14 to 24.

The show is directed by Marty Newell, of Queenstown, who played Jesus in the Showbiz Queenstown production in 1999.

The musical director is Hamish Oliver, of Christchurch, who arrives this week for the first band rehearsals.

The band includes Oliver as conductor and on keyboards, with Cheryl Collie and assistant musical director James Stephenson also on keyboards.

Phil Hartshorn and Bardie Jull play guitar, Gen Numaguchi plays trumpet, Angela Mote-Andrews plays wind instruments, Wal Dix is on bass and Jason Chisholm is on drums.
