Tramper safe

A tramper was found safe and well in the Rees Valley yesterday after being reported overdue by two associates on Sunday evening.

Senior Constable Julian Cahill, of Queenstown, said police found the 20-year-old Norwegian yesterday morning ''walking back towards civilisation''.

The man and his two friends had parked their vehicle at Muddy Creek late last week to begin the Rees-Dart loop, but the 20-year-old began complaining of a sore leg. The man opted to stay at Shelter Rock Hut for a day or two to recuperate before walking back to the car at Muddy Creek - an estimated five-hour tramp.

When his associates reached Muddy Creek on Sunday night they found the vehicle still there and no sign of their friend.

A search and rescue team was deployed on Monday morning and the man was found by police in a 4WD vehicle.
