Hunter winched out of ravine

A 67-year-old Wanaka hunter was winched out of a ravine in the Tarras area last night after he became disoriented and could not find his way out.

The man's four hunting companions raised the alarm at 5.55pm, after the man radioed them to say he was stuck.

Southern deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said the man walked into the ravine, but could not get out again.

Police staff from Cromwell and Alexandra went to the area, but the terrain was so difficult a rescue helicopter from Dunedin was dispatched.

Although the man was not injured, a paramedic was lowered before the man was winched up about 8.30pm, Snr Sgt Craig Brown said.

He was suffering mild hypothermia and was taken by ambulance to the Cromwell Medical Centre to be checked.
