A tree was all that stopped a vehicle carrying a mother and child plunging into Lake Wakatipu yesterday.

The vehicle slid down a steep bank beside Frankton Rd, near the intersection with Perkins Rd, in Queenstown, about 10.15am and came to rest against a tree, a few metres from the water.

Constable Abby Pagel said the driver, a 31-year-old British woman living in Queenstown, had felt faint and had intended to pull off the road into a layby.

However, she continued past the layby and veered off the road, crossing the Frankton walkway, before hitting the tree.

The driver, who was ''in shock'', was taken to Lakes District Hospital for checks.

Her 2-year-old daughter was ''absolutely fine'', Const Pagel said.
