Queenstown photographer Jason Law's image of Goblin Forest at Egmont National Park has been named a finalist in the landscape category of New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year 2014.

An exhibition featuring the 42 finalist images was opened in Cathedral Square in Christchurch last night.

More than 3000 entries, in four categories, were judged by photographers Andris Apse and Kim Westerskov, and New Zealand Geographic editor James Frankham.

The winners will be announced in late October, when the exhibition moves to Auckland for a month at the Viaduct Basin.

An image of the lone tree at Lake Wanaka, by Christchurch photographer Dennis Radermacher, is also a finalist in the landscape category.
