Checking checkouts

Police have made their second arrest in three weeks of a supermarket customer trying to underpay for groceries at a self-checkout.

Senior Constable Chris Blackford said a 30-year-old Polish woman was arrested and charged with theft at Wakatipu New World on Tuesday after being caught by staff selecting a cheaper item than they were actually weighing.

The woman, who was in New Zealand on a work visa, was attempting to save about $30.

The police would take a ''firm line'' with this kind of activity.

Wakatipu New World owner-operator Michelle King said it was working with police to identify ''a few'' others who may have used the same method.
