Big fish -but dog scoffed it

Fishing enthusiasts gathered at the top of Lake Wakatipu on Saturday for Glenorchy's annual fishing competition.

As usual, some of the best stories were about the one that got away.

Co-organiser Sarah Walker said there were 120 entrants, slightly down on last year. Conditions were fine but cold.

The competition attracted people from as far away as Palmerston, Oamaru, Milford and Invercargill, she said.

No records were broken this year.

The heaviest fish was a 1.982kg brown trout caught by Arrowtown's Andrew Green.

Among the hard-luck stories was the one from the competitor who won the smallest-fish category but claimed his dog ate his biggest catch.

One woman who had a hook buried in her finger was helped by a visiting veterinarian.

One of the organisers, Sonya Poplowski, won the female heaviest brown trout category.

Mrs Walker said the event raised more than $2000 for the Glenorchy School Parents Teachers and Friends Association.
