Staff at Queenstown Airport's newest passenger lounge were kept busy yesterday, welcoming their first guests.

The Manaia lounge, Maori for protector of land, sea and sky, was to have opened in July, but was delayed due to a series of setbacks.

The first-floor lounge caters to eligible Qantas Club members and Jetstar international passengers, as well as passengers without frequent flier lounge access.

Aviation ground-handling company PlaneBiz signed an agreement with the Queenstown Airport Corporation to fit out and manage the lounge, which caters for up to 75 passengers and is open daily from 7.30am to 4pm.

The interior design, which includes patchwork carpet, walls covered in historical black and white photos of Wakatipu, was done by Tania Gorton, of Next Dore in Christchurch.

PlaneBiz director Frank Ryder said the design and fit-out of the lounge reflected the environment.

''The colour scheme picks up the hues of Central Otago and little touches like the black and white photo wall of holiday snaps give it a personal flavour.''

Facilities include a business centre with free Wi-Fi, desktop computers, wireless printer, scanner and fax, as well as TV and reading areas, dining areas and bathrooms.

There is also a complimentary food and beverage service featuring Central Otago wines and freshly prepared hot and cold dishes.

Queenstown Airport chief executive Scott Paterson said the lounge was a ''welcome addition'' to the airport and complemented the corporation's aim of providing ''world-class facilities and an outstanding experience''.
