Words fly about erroneous words

The level of urgency needed in editing the Wanaka Lakefront Reserves Management Plan caused some friction among the town's community board members yesterday.

Queenstown Lakes deputy mayor Lyal Cocks said there was ''a lot of editing and corrections to be made'' in the document before the Wanaka Community Board could sign it off.

''It can't go to council like this ... if it gets to council like this, it's not going to survive.''

Board chairwoman Rachel Brown - who was on the panel which amended the draft plan following public consultation - said she was ''not proud of the document until it's ironed clean of all those mistakes''.

However, she suggested a thorough proof-reading and any necessary corrections could be made after the meeting.

Mr Cocks disagreed and insisted the board address concerns about the document's wording during yesterday's meeting.

Ms Brown said errors were largely due to the style of the document, which was inherited from the consultants who drafted it.

''I don't care what the consultants had. You want us to sign off this document,'' Mr Cocks replied.

''Otherwise let's leave it lying on the table for two months and we'll sort it out ... there are some words in here and sentences that don't make any sense, so let's get it sorted.''

An objective in the plan to ''reflect the preferences of the Wanaka community as expressed in the public consultation process'', was of particular concern to Mr Cocks.

''You can't tell us that everyone at the hearing preferred what's in the document now ... to me it [the objective] just doesn't seem appropriate.''

After some discussion, Ms Brown agreed to remove the objective from the plan.

The board recommended the council adopt the plan, subject to editorial and substance corrections.
