Poems written by three Queenstown children will form part of a public poetry reading in the Wakatipu next week.

Remarkables Primary School pupils Max Simpson (9) and Lachy Boniface (8), along with former Arrowtown Primary School pupil Becky Reid, are among 21 New Zealand children whose poems were selected from 2000 entrants for inclusion in a new poetry book, A Treasury of NZ Poems for Children by Paula Green.

While Max's poem was about ''a guy who takes all the sounds'', Lachy's was inspired by a true story.

''It's about my goldfish who died two days after we got it. [It] was killed by the neighbour's cat.''

The children will read their poems during a free public event at Remarkables Primary School next Tuesday from 5pm.

The event is part of Paula Green's nationwide tour, during which she will also visit Arrowtown Primary.
