Community pool options up for discussion

Wanaka community swimming pool options could cost the town's ratepayers as little as an extra $3.06 a year or as much as $240.26 a year.

Nine options are set out in a consultation document published by the Queenstown Lakes District Council on Monday. The public has until November 21 to make submissions.

According to the document, the cheapest option (SQ) would be to borrow $370,000 and upgrade the existing 25m, six-lane pool in Plantation Rd.

The most expensive option listed (2AL) would be for the council to lease an eight-lane pool built by the developers of the new Northlake subdivision. Lease payments would amount to $37,586,391 over 50 years and boost the average rate by 10.2% or $240.26 a year.

The council wanted to upgrade the existing pool and add a learners' pool but found the pool building did not meet earthquake standards. It then decided to consult the public about what it wanted and what ratepayers were prepared to pay for.

It has put up three possible sites - Plantation Rd, Northlake or the Three Parks subdivision.

The council favours Three Parks and a new $11.8 million eight-lane pool next to the new sports facility there. That option (1A) would add 7.81% or $184.05 to the average rate.

The same pool at Northlake, built by the council (2A), would cost $12.44 million, and add 8.55% or $201.51 to the average rates bill. In Plantation Rd, it would cost $12.72 million and add 9.71% or $228.93 to rates.

Lawyer for Northlake Investments Ltd, Maree Baker-Galloway, has argued the consultation document contains ''errors and important omissions''.

However, the company's legal bid on Monday to have the document changed failed in the High Court.

Ms Baker-Galloway would not comment yesterday on whether an appeal was likely, but has agreed to provide the Otago Daily Times with specific information about the company's concerns.
