June 9 was a ''life-changing'' day for Sydney couple John Mills and Greg Clark. Last Tuesday was another one.

Almost five months to the day after Mr Mills and Mr Clark ran through a historic property in Lower Shotover Rd alerting owners Phil and Jane George, also from Sydney, to a raging fire, they returned to get married.

Speaking to the Otago Daily Times after their nuptials on Tuesday, Mr Mills said it was a spur-of-the-moment decision.

''We hadn't thought about doing it, ever. The night of the fire, it was one of those things that was life-changing.''

Mr Clark and Mr Mills had arrived in Queenstown on June 8 and had a ''late night''.

In the early hours, they realised the house, part of Cloverdale, one of the first dairy farms in the area, was on fire.

Mr Mills said he ran through the house to alert Mr and Mrs George and after throwing his unpacked suitcase out the window returned to get Mr Clark's.

Both men were taken to Lakes District Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

After that the men visited France for Mr Mills' 50th birthday and it was there, surrounded by friends and family, he decided to propose, wanting formal acknowledgement of their 26-year relationship.

Last week, when the couple returned to Queenstown, they made a snap decision to wed then and there. Mr Mills said the Georges were the only guests at their wedding, held at the site of the fire.

They married near a fireplace - the only thing left standing after the June incident - and later flew to Cecil Peak for photos before landing at a private property near Arrowtown for more celebrations.

On Wednesday they returned to Sydney to tell their unsuspecting family and friends, with celebrations held there last night.
