Councillor leaving

Arrowtown's lone representative at the Queenstown Lakes District Council table intends leaving town, sparking a by-election.

Lex Perkins - a former Bluff borough and Southland regional councillor - was re-elected unopposed in the 2013 local body elections as Arrowtown's ward councillor.

It was to be his second term representing the historic town, following three years as a Wakatipu ward councillor.

But it is understood Mr Perkins, who is about to turn 75, has bought a motor home and intends to sell his house and travel the country with his wife for two or three years.

The Otago Daily Times has been told the move was sparked by a conversation with his son, who worried his father has spent so much of his life on councils and committees that he had not had time to enjoy his later years.

Cr Perkins did not wish to comment yesterday.

He confirmed he had told Mayor Vanessa van Uden of his intentions but had yet to resign. He expected to do so in January or February, after his house sells.

Ms van Uden could not be reached for comment.
