Wakatipu children are being given the chance to wish Queenstown a merry Christmas during this year's Christmas Cracker concert.

Show director Simon Green said in a first for the event, children were being asked to compile a 30-second video capturing the spirit of Christmas and what it means for people in Queenstown.

The winning videos would be shown at the concert next month on the Tomtom Productions ''superscreen'', which would form the backdrop for the show at the Queenstown Rec Ground.

''It's about giving the kids the chance to not only see themselves up on the big screen but also to have a think about what Christmas means to them and to pass on a Christmas message to the audience on the night.''

Completed videos could be posted on the Christmas Cracker Facebook page and those with the most ''likes'' and ''shares'' would be played during the concert.

This year's Christmas Cracker, being staged on December 6, will feature more than 150 local entertainers, along with food stalls and a fireworks finale.
