Lone example of Ford failure

Henry Ford is remembered mostly for the success of his car-building enterprises - particularly his mass-produced Model T.

But the upmarket Model K, now on show at the Wanaka Warbirds and Wheels Museum, is proof not everything went his way.

The Model K was considered a failure because of its high price and poor quality, and only 900 of the two-speed, six-cylinder, 40hp touring cars were made before production ceased in 1906.

The ''entry-level'' Model T went into production two years later. New Zealand's only example of the Model K is on loan from the Bill Richardson Truck Museum, in Invercargill.
