Unusually high snowfalls have made November a tough month for contractors working on a new base building at The Remarkables ski area.

NZSki chief executive Paul Anderson said 10cm fell on the field earlier in the week, and it was getting ''regular dustings''.

''We've had a hell of a lot of more snow than we expected,'' Mr Anderson said.

However, such contingencies were built into the $20 million project, and it remained on schedule.

''The guys are making good progress in challenging conditions.''

Basement wall panels were up and joints in place, while work was well advanced on foundations at ground level.

The old base building would remain in place next season, with some operations still based there, he said.

Its future beyond next season had yet to be decided.
