Motorcyclist dead following crash near Kingston

One motorcyclist has died this afternoon after a crash involving a van and another motorcyclist on State Highway 6 between Queenstown and Kingston

Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane said the crash occurred about 3km north of Kingston.

The road has been blocked to all traffic and "substantial" delays are likely for several hours.

At this stage there are no detours in place he said.

Police Serious Crash Unit are investigating, Snr Sgt Lennane said.

An Otago Daily Times photographer at the scene said it appeared a group of four bikers had been riding together when one of the motorbikes collided with a small campervan.

Police working at the scene could not yet confirm the cause of the crash, which occurred on a straight stretch of highway.

The dead rider's body remained at the scene, while the bike the rider was on was in pieces.

St John South Island communications advisor Ian Henderson said one person is being flown by rescue helicopter to Dunedin with serious injuries.

Four patients are being taken by road to Lakes District Hospital.
