Spilling of thousands of litres of beer admitted

An Albert Town man was convicted and remanded for sentence in February after admitting deliberately spilling up to 12,000 litres of beer at the brewery where he was employed.

Appearing before Judge Michael Turner in the Queenstown District Court yesterday, Kenneth William Super (52) admitted three charges: burglary of Wanaka Beerworks on November 4; possession of class C-controlled cannabis, and cultivation of cannabis, both on November 5.

Prosecuting Sergeant Ian Collin said Super ''took issue'' with how Wanaka Beerworks was being operated by new management following the sale of the company in August.

On the evening of November 4, he entered the building and opened valves on tanks holding a total of 12,000 litres of beer in various states of fermentation.

The beer seeped through the building's walls, causing damage to an adjoining toy museum. Damage was estimated at $100,000 to $300,000.

Police found 170 grams of cannabis plant material, 65 cannabis seeds and four cannabis plants in his home when he was arrested the next day, Sgt Collin said.

Judge Turner convicted Super and remanded him on bail for sentence on February 23, telling him imprisonment was ''likely''.

He ordered reparation and pre-sentencing reports, and ordered him to enter a restorative justice process.
