Save for a lucky few, Queenstowners hoping to hear Katy Perry roar during her stay at the resort have had to make do with a social media ''hi'' instead.

The pop superstar, who will perform in Auckland tonight and tomorrow as part of her Prismatic World Tour, has spent the past two days unwinding in the resort since her last concert in Brisbane on Monday.

On Wednesday night the 30-year-old and her entourage dined at Arrowtown restaurant Saffron before visiting the adjacent Blue Door bar.

Saffron and Blue Door co-owner Melanie Hill would not comment, but a Queenstown woman told the Otago Daily Times she unwittingly had a chat with Perry and her mother at the bar.

The woman said she had no idea who the singer was until afterwards.

''They were just really nice, ordinary people talking about where they'd been and how lovely New Zealand was.''

They told her they had visited Wanaka that day, travelling by helicopter.

A Queenstown man said he saw Perry at the Blue Door with a group of about a dozen people before they were whisked away before midnight in waiting vehicles, avoiding paparazzi waiting on Buckingham St.

Perry was wearing a black top, black lycra pants, a baseball cap and trainers, he said.

Earlier that evening, Perry tweeted ''hi'' and posted a picture of herself on Instagram next to a Wanaka-based Alpine Helicopters helicopter landed by a mountain lake.

An Alpine Helicopters employee said staff had been instructed not to comment.

Perry is understood to be staying at The Lodge at The Hills, on Sir Michael Hill's private golf course - costing between $20,000 and $30,000 per night, depending on the number of guests.

The Lodge can accommodate up to 12 people and features six suites, all with en suites; an art studio; music and media room; wine cellar-dining room; a large open-plan kitchen and dining area; a heated infinity pool; spa pool; sauna; grass tennis court; fire pit; outdoor fireplace; petanque court; and a par-3 golf hole.

Perry is due to fly out of Queenstown today on a private jet, bound for Auckland.
