Temporary hosing restrictions in place

Temporary restrictions on irrigating lawns and gardens in Arrowtown have been put in place.

The restrictions came into force yesterday and mean watering using hand-held hoses can only be done between 9am and 6pm.

Those wishing to set a sprinkler were asked to only do so during the evening, when the weather was cooler.

Queenstown Lakes District Council chief engineer said the new restrictions had been set because the Arrowtown water supply was not coping with the demand during the day while one of three tanks at the reservoir was under repair.

The supply could produce up to 45 litres and hour, but the demand was averaging 67 litres an hour.

''While this hot weather lasts, we need to increase the restrictions a little bit more so that we can match supply to demand and make sure the reservoir refills overnight.

''We are very grateful to those who have already cut back on watering their lawns and gardens during the day.''
