Main temporarily repaired

A temporary repair is in place on the section of water main in Bridge Hill, Alexandra, that burst on Tuesday afternoon, while property owners affected by the burst remain ''stoic'' and get on with the cleanup.

Central Otago District Council infrastructure services manager Jon Kingsford said that, to the council's knowledge, about five properties were affected, some more than others, with damage at ''different ends of the scale''.

The burst caused a geyser that sprayed water about 30m in the air. Water ran down streets and through properties, causing flooding and leaving behind debris.

Mr Kingsford said the council was working on a permanent solution but the busy period was causing logistical challenges in obtaining the correct materials.

''[I am] not sure how long it will take for a permanent fix ... We hope we will have it sorted within a week.''

In the meantime, the council was in contact with those affected, discussing what would happen next.

''Everyone seems to be pretty stoic - they are getting on with cleaning up and you have to admire their positivity and tenacity at a time like this.''

He said he was ''very sympathetic'' towards those affected.

He knew of one property that had been ''significantly'' affected but he could not comment on the amount, kind, or cost of the damage caused.

The pipe that burst on Tuesday was the main pipe to the Bridge Hill Reservoir, which held about 4000cu m of water.

A temporary repair in place allowed the main to start operating again in the meantime.
