Busy weekend in resort with music, wine, golf

A bumper weekend is on the cards for the Southern Lakes district with two major events expected to attract about 30,000 people.

Tomorrow a capacity crowd of 15,000 people will attend the Gibbston Summer Concert, featuring Heart, Three Dog Night and Foreigner.

Greenstone Entertainment chief executive Amanda Calvert said the bands were impressed by the New Zealand scenery and the venues to date.

Heart and Three Dog Night arrived in Queenstown on Wednesday, while Foreigner will touch down today, having travelled to Australia earlier in the week for concerts in Sydney and Melbourne.

The forecast for tomorrow was promising. MetService was predicting a high of 23degC, with a few spots of rain and northeasterly winds.

Ms Calvert said free water would be available at the venue, along with some free sunscreen, but she recommended concert-goers take their own.

While food and refreshments were available, people were welcome to take picnics and non-alcoholic beverages.

The car park's gates would open at 10am and the concert venue gates at 11am.

Entertainment would begin at 11.30am with Wakatipu High School band Love Lost Demons performing before Three Dog Night took to the stage at 1pm.

Foreigner would perform from 3pm, before Heart rounded out the entertainment from 5pm.

Other events in the resort over the weekend include the sold-out 11th Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration, which began yesterday and will end tomorrow, attracting more than 200 people from across the world, and showcasing products by more than 40 Central Otago winemakers.

At Kelvin Heights, the Queenstown Golf Club will celebrate its centenary with golf matches today and tomorrow, before celebrations conclude on Sunday, with a mixed Canadian foursomes tournament, a barbecue dinner and prizegiving.
