Motorists using the dusty back roads of the Upper Clutha at Easter beware.

They are likely to encounter some of the 140 Ford Model A cars in Wanaka for a week of rallies, picnics and displays.

Meeting co-ordinator Richard Muir told the Otago Daily Times this week the Model A owners and their passengers would be exploring the gravel roads of such places as Thomsons Gorge, Dingleburn Valley, Bendigo, Welshtown, the Snow Farm and the Matukituki Valley.

''I've warned people from around New Zealand they are going to have dirty cars after day one.''

The meet begins on March 31 with a concours d'elegance and ends on April 5 with a public open day on Pembroke Park in Wanaka in support of Wanaka St John.

Mr Muir said Model A owners met every two years, alternating between the North and South Islands.

Some of those coming to Wanaka were from the United States, Canada and Australia.

The Model A replaced Ford's Model T and almost 5 million were produced from 1927 to 1932. About 200,000 remain, 1500 of them in New Zealand.

Mr Muir said cars changed hands for up to $50,000, depending on condition and rarity.
