Paraglider with broken leg flown from national park

A 26-year-old paraglider was flown by helicopter to Lakes District Hospital yesterday afternoon after breaking his leg in the Mount Aspiring National Park.

St John Wakatipu station manager Craig Downing said the man was flying with two others when he caught his foot at the wrong angle during a ''heavy landing'' on rough terrain about 2pm.

The group were in the Black Peak area of the national park, but were ''very well prepared''.

They had a tracking device that that provided a location and that ''certainly helps [us] significantly'', he said.

''If all our patients had that, it would certainly help a lot.''

Mr Downing said paramedics were transported to the site by helicopter and had an ''easy landing spot'' beside the patient.

He was transported to Frankton by 3.30pm and was undergoing treatment yesterday afternoon.

Queenstown police and Search and Rescue were notified but were not required to attend.
