Hoping to get on Monopoly

After narrowly missing out on a place on a global Monopoly board in 2008, Queenstown has been given a second chance in the 2015 version.

Hasbro has launched its second worldwide vote to find the 22 greatest places in the world to be included on the Monopoly Here & Now: World Edition game board.

Queenstown is the only New Zealand locale to make the list of 80 finalists.

In 2008, 20 cities and towns were included in the world edition version - Queenstown ranked 21st and was included as a Community Chest card.

To be included in the 2015 version, Queenstown, one of three Oceania locations nominated, must rank in the top 20.

Yesterday, the resort was in 79th place.

Hasbro New Zealand promotions manager Karlie Fox said Queenstown was the ''clear choice'' for nomination because it was a place all New Zealanders could be proud of, with its adventurous outdoors attitude and stunning scenery.

''Finally having New Zealand represented would be such an achievement, as would securing enough votes to beat Adelaide and Sydney,'' she said.

Queenstown's success depended on the number of people who voted for the resort online.

Voting closes on March 3. The top-ranked location will be placed on the highest rent property, traditionally held by Mayfair.

Two spaces on the board would be reserved for any place nominated through a ''wild card'' vote - any region from any country in the world could be nominated for those between March 3 and March 9.

The final list of places to be included in the 2015 world version will be announced on March 19, the Monopoly brand's 80th birthday.

The game, featuring well-known landmark tokens and new gameplay, would be available in September.

Players race around the board to visit as many locations as possible, collecting passport stamps along the way.

Cash is collected from visitor fees when opponents land on players' locations.

The first player to fill their passport wins.
