Van in crash

A Jucy rental Toyota Hiace van, driven by a 30-year-old male Chinese tourist, ran off Mt Aspiring Rd early yesterday afternoon, breaking one deer fence post and knocking over two others.

Wanaka Constable Stephanie Chambers said the crash was being investigated but it appeared the man was travelling too fast around a corner on the gravel road about 6km west of the Treble Cone skifield turnoff.

The van was not badly damaged and the two occupants escaped injury.

Police are awaiting the result of a blood-alcohol test of an Irish woman whose vehicle crashed near Queenstown early yesterday.

Sergeant Tracy Haggart said the 28-year-old Queenstown resident lost control while driving towards Arthurs Point on Gorge Rd about 1am and the car hit a bank.

The woman was taken to Lakes District Hospital for assessment.
