Wanaka Mitre 10's Jack Russell dog is wirehaired in the true sense of the word, while his ram companion shares the same steely qualities.

The pair are part of the store's entry in the Wanaka A&P Show's No 8 wire sculpture competition, which closes at 5pm tomorrow ahead of the show on Friday and Saturday.

Store marketing manager Hannah Twiss said the competition's ''What the A&P show means to you'' theme inspired a team of eight staff members to collaborate on a piece.

The steel-wool fleece of Karen Wilson's ram and wire-netting exterior of Miss Twiss' terrier - representing the show's hotly-contested Jack Russell race - are moulded around a No 8 wire frame and will sit alongside a pumpkin, gumboot, knitting and other show-related objects in the finished entry.

Mitre 10 has been helping promote the competition, which is new to the show this year.

Run by the Upper Clutha A and P Society, the show is one of New Zealand's largest agricultural and pastoral events, attracting more than 30,000 people and 450 trade exhibitors.

It has expanded its footprint again this weekend, with increased trade space of 1500sq m in Wanaka's showgrounds and Pembroke Park.

An economic impact report would be produced for the first time this year from surveys handed out during the show to exhibitors and the general public, show co-ordinator Jane Stalker said.

Organisers were checking the weather forecast almost hourly and at this stage, rain was predicted overnight on Friday.

''We'd be happy with that. We just find a weather forecast we like and stick with it.''

The 78th annual show begins at 8.30am on Friday, while on Saturday gates open at 8am.

The Jack Russell race will be held on Saturday at 12.30pm, just before the grand parade, at 12.45pm.
