After almost eight years of providing transport for Wanaka people needing to visit Dunstan Hospital, at Clyde, the Wheels to Dunstan Trust is celebrating the purchase of a new vehicle.

The Mazda CX5 has fewer seats than the 17-year-old Toyota Hiace it replaces, but is expected to provide a more comfortable ride.

Trust chairman George Russell (right) said experience had shown having four passenger seats was sufficient.

The average number of people carried over the last seven years was just under two.

The service began in September 2007, to provide door-to-door public transport for non-driving patients, five days a week.

Major contributors to the purchase and running of the new vehicle were the Central Lakes Trust ($23,384), the Otago Community Trust ($9000), Grandview Probus Club ($1000), the Callis Trust ($5000), and Dunedin City Mazda provided a $5180 discount.

The trust has 58 volunteers who provide an estimated 1600 hours of work each year.

The new vehicle is likely to travel more than 20,000km in its first year and carry more than 200 passengers.
