Still plenty of time to have a say

Queenstown Lakes district councillor Calum McLeod says the chance for residents to have their say on the proposed medium density zone for Wanaka is far from over.

Residents can send feedback to the council now and can make submissions when the proposed new district plan is formally notified later this year.

Cr McLeod, who owns Cinema Paradiso in the proposed medium density zone, says he was initially sceptical about the medium density zone idea.

He had seen how it worked in other places, including Vancouver where it is known as ''gentle density''.

He believed it would allow people in older houses on large sections to build modern ''in-fill'' accommodation.

However, there would still be ''a lot of control'' over what was allowed, and development would not be ''open slather''.

Council senior communications adviser Michele Poole said two drop-in sessions were advertised in public notice columns, the council's Scuttlebutt publication, and its web and Facebook sites.

Council general manager of planning and development Marc Bretherton said it sent out 2833 letters to landowners directly affected by proposed zoning changes in Queenstown, Arrowtown, Fernhill, Frankton and Wanaka.

''Letters were not sent to every residential household in the low density residential zone, as the provisions are not set to change dramatically compared to other zones.''

However, feedback was invited through drop-in sessions, and these were ''well attended''.

''I reiterate that this was informal, non-statutory consultation on first drafts - a request for views and feedback outside of any formal process,'' Mr Bretherton said.

Because the consultation was ''informal'', feedback received would not be publicly available.

''It is collated and analysed and feeds into our refinement of the residential provisions [of the district plan],'' he said.
