Organisers of Saturday's Iron Run ride from Queenstown to Arrowtown are hailing it a success - and they have started planning the next ride in 2017.

You couldn't move for leather in Queenstown at the weekend as more than 2000 riders - mostly Harley-Davidson enthusiasts - converged for one of the country's biggest motorcycle events.

Organiser Gary Manch, of Christchurch, said spectators lined the route on Saturday morning to cheer the 1400-odd motorcycles whizzing past.

''It was quite amazing really.

We were so lucky with the weather.''

The majority of riders were from New Zealand. The overseas contingent included Russians, Irish, Scottish and Americans.

Mr Manch said: ''We're working hard for 2017 to increase the amount of overseas visitors.''

Voting for the most popular motorcycle also doubled as a fundraiser for the local hospice appeal.

About $4500 was raised, with $1500 of that raised by winner Queenstown's Mary Keith and her ''hot pink'' Harley-Davidson trike.

One member of the public complained about delays caused by the ride.
