The balloon has gone.

Nasa's super-balloon lifted off the Wanaka Airfield at 10.15am this morning, and was gone in "quite a woosh, spectators said.

Nasa's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility programme office chief Debora Fairbrother said they were very please with the launch and everything went smoothly.

Nasa budgets willing, they would be back to do it all again next year, she said. The balloon's trajectory has it flying north and eastwards towards the Oamaru and Timaru area, where people may be able to see it passing over with binoculars.

The balloon's trajectory is being tracked on Nasa's website.
