A "Closed" sign on Wanaka shop Gallery Thirty Three is an unusual sight in Wanaka today, as most retailers defy the law and open for business on Good Friday.

Retailers are contravening the Shop Trading Hours Repeal Act 1990, and were willing to risk a $1000 fine.

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has not said if it is planning to have an inspector visit the town, however after last Easter it was suggested the ministry would only act if there was a complaint.

Wanaka retailers argue the town should be treated like Queenstown and Taupo, which are exempt from the requirement to be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, because they are tourist towns.
