Four climbers rescued from Mt Aspiring National Park

Four climbers were rescued from a peak in Mt Aspiring National Park this morning after getting into difficulty.

Wanaka police response manager Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said police were advised at 9.20am the climbing group was stranded on Mt French - which is on the southern side of Bonar Glacier - on an area known as the Quarterdeck.

The three males and one female, aged in their late 20s and early 30s, were unable to descend due to icy, dangerous conditions on the mountain, so had called for assistance.

Two members of LandSAR Wanaka's alpine cliff rescue team were flown to the site by Aspiring Helicopters to retrieve the climbers, who were then brought back to Wanaka.

Snr Sgt Grindell understood one climber had a dislocated finger, but the others were fit and well.

He was unsure of their nationality.
