Bigger school

Funding to expand the new Shotover Primary School in Queenstown was confirmed in Prime Minister John Key's pre-budget announcement's yesterday.

The Ministry of Education's head of education infrastructure service Kim Shannon said new schools were generally built in stages, with additional teaching spaces provided when the roll grew.

Shotover Primary School, which opened in February, was scheduled to have a second stage completed in 2017.

The budget for the second stage was estimated to be up to $5 million, allowing the school's roll capacity to rise from 460 to 650.

At present, the school took year 1 to 4 pupils. but the second stage would caters for pupils up to year 8.

The expansion would create another eight teacher positions at the school.
