Arrowtown School pupils have started their new term by moving into a flash new building.

The school's $2.4 million, double-storey classroom and library block was put to use for the first time yesterday after a nine-month building project.

Principal Chris Bryant said it had five classroom spaces, replacing three ageing prefab classrooms, and would soon house the school's library.

It would accommodate an expected rise in the school's roll from about 490 to 550 by the end of the year.

The roll was then expected to ''plateau'', but the school was now able to cater for further growth if residential development on the edges of the township went ahead.

School staff had strong input into the building's design, which followed ''modern learning environment'' principles with open, adaptable spaces, he said.

It also had a wireless network to support tablet computers and high-definition screens.

''The idea is to have an environment that supports their learning.''
