The Christchurch man who killed the lawn at his Wanaka holiday house in a chemical mix-up has been offered two pairs of free glasses by a firm of optometrists.

The Otago Daily Times story about Paul Currie's misfortune attracted considerable interest online yesterday and many readers offered their commiserations and own hard luck stories.

Mr Currie told the ODT he was not wearing his glasses when he misread the label on a container of spray.

Instead of using a spray for broadleaf weeds only, he used a broad-spectrum herbicide containing glyphosate, which killed all the grass it came into contact with.

The media advisers for the optometrists called the ODT yesterday to make the offer, worth about $800.
