7 more winter flights a week

A Record number of transtasman flights are due to land in Queenstown this winter, 13% more than last year.

Queenstown Airport Corporation chief executive Scott Paterson said an average of 59 flights a week would arrive in the resort direct from Australia's east coast over the peak winter months, equating to seven more landings each week compared to last year.

The increased international flight schedule had largely been driven by Jetstar's three-times-a-week service between the Gold Coast and Queenstown, which began in December.

More flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane had also been added across the Jetstar-Qantas network.

Mr Paterson said the winter season was looking ''very positive'' and the boost in flights and seat capacity would make Central Otago and the Southern Lakes an attractive short-haul winter holiday destination for Australians.

The airport's $12 million international terminal expansion was due for completion in June, which would enable the facility to deliver ''world-class facilities and an outstanding passenger experience'', Mr Paterson said.

Driven by strong year-on-year international passenger growth, the 4300sq m addition to the southern end of the terminal would double the size of Queenstown Airport's international operations, enabling it to better cater for existing passenger volumes and accommodate future growth.

The airport's winter flight schedule officially begins on June 22.
