'Missing' Dunedin student safe

A 21-year-old Dunedin student running the Routeburn Track made it out safely today after being delayed by the weather, police say.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of the Southern District Command Centre, said police had been given incorrect information early yesterday morning that the man was overdue but further inquiries revealed he was due out today and a search was cancelled.

The 32km track in Mt Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks had snow forecast tonight, MetService said.

Duty meteorologist David Miller said a couple of hours of heavy rain in the area today had eased to showers but it was getting colder tonight, with snow expected to fall in the area as low as 800m above sea level.
