All 31 members of the Wanaka-based Adventure Consultants climbing team who were stranded on Mt Everest following Saturday's devastating earthquake in Nepal have been evacuated to base camp.

Adventure Consultants programme co-ordinator Mark Morrison said the group members - guides, sherpa staff and clients - were flown down to base camp from camp one and camp two by helicopter today.

They would remain there with three other Adventure Consultants staff for probably the next couple of days until they could be safely transported the rest of the way down the mountain.

Five of the company's Nepalese employees were killed on Saturday when the earthquake triggered an avalanche which swept through base camp.
