Bid to boost rural games crowd numbers

Organisers are striving to boost spectator numbers at next year's New Zealand Rural Games in Queenstown, and entry fees will no longer be charged.

Chief organiser Steve Hollander said the games, first held this February, would take place again at the Queenstown Recreation Ground over next Waitangi weekend, after this year's games ''pretty much broke even''.

Sixteen rural sports championships, including wood chopping and speed shearing, featured at the games.

However, many people had been deterred by the $20 a day entry fee this year.
