Czech mate thwarted

Two tourists were warned by Queenstown police after being caught in a compromising position outside one of New Zealand's poshest hotels.

The couple, from the Czech Republic, were spotted on a wall, under a street lamp, at the front of the five-star Eichardt's hotel, in Marine Parade, at 3.15am on Monday.

Members of the public were pointing at them, alerting a passing police patrol.

Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown, said: ''They were picked up for offensive behaviour and taken to the station.

''It's totally unacceptable; too amorous for public display.

''They said that's all right in the Czech Republic but changed their attitude at the station.''

The luxury hotel is expected to open the country's most expensive hotel suite - $10,000 a night - in a neighbouring building which is under construction.
