Funds wanted to buy 'public space'

The Cardrona Valley Residents and Ratepayers Society is requesting ''an allocation of funds'' from the council to buy land for ''public space''.

Society representative Jenny Roberts noted the council had allocated money in 2009 for a ''village green'' but this funding was ''surrendered'' in the 2012 long-term plan, and an attempt to buy land from the Public Trust was also not completed.

''Currently, the only public space in this area of Cardrona is the road verge.''

There were some sections for sale opposite the Cardrona Hotel, Ms Roberts said.

''One of these would be appropriate for a village green.''

The society considered the green could act as a bicycle dismounting and parking area for the proposed Wanaka to Cardrona cycle track.

It also wants the council to finish installing 22 lamp columns through the village.
