Builder Jason Parkes, of Premium Skate Park Designs, tries out his handiwork at the new 3m-deep cloverleaf-shaped bowl at the Wanaka skate park.

Dozens of young Upper Clutha skateboarders are ''dropping in'' to the park as word spreads around the district the major new addition is ready to use.

The bowl is part of the long-awaited $344,000 extension to the park due to be finished and officially opened in August.

Park trustee Eddie Spearing told the Otago Daily Times within days of the bowl being finished, children as young as 8, who had been practising elsewhere, were using the dauntingly deep bowl.

''It's a really good facility for the town.

''People keep stopping me in the street and saying `The skate park is so beautiful; it's world class', which it is.''

A pagoda for spectators will be erected this weekend and the park is being designed so temporary seating can be put in place.

Mr Spearing hoped competitions would be held at the park in February.

Mr Parkes said bad weather had held up work.

He was reluctant to provide a firm completion date for the remaining work but pointed out he was on a fixed-price contract.
