Group to lobby council on bridge site

A lobby group proposing an alternative site for replacing the Kawarau Falls Bridge near Queenstown plans a show of force at a council public forum today.

However, its members are concerned the New Zealand Transport Agency's favoured site immediately downstream of the existing bridge is a ''fait accompli''.

The group favours a site about 1.5km to the east - connecting with the yet-to-be-built eastern arterial road - that it says will alleviate congestion at the Frankton and airport roundabouts.

A month ago, the Queenstown Lakes District Council asked the agency to review the analysis justifying its choice of site.

Group member Hudson Turnbull said the report was expected to be in the council's hands this week, and could be tabled at today's full council meeting.

''Regardless of whether NZTA present their report or not, we will be there beating our drum.

''We've got to get this thing in the right place because if we don't, it's forever going to be an absolute nightmare.''

Construction of a $25 million, 250m-long curved bridge beside the existing one-lane bridge is due to start late this year.

It was given priority by the National Government in an election pledge 12 months ago.

Mr Hudson conceded the group's efforts could come too late to change the NZTA's thinking, but public concern about congestion in Frankton had emerged only in the past 12 months or so.

''People have suddenly woken up to what we're talking about.''

A Facebook page set up by the group to gather public support has garnered more than 1000 'likes'.

NZTA acting southern business unit manager for highway network operations, Ian Duncan, told the Otago Daily Times last month work would continue on the current project while the review of its analysis was under way.
