Five questions with Queenstown Winter Festival director Lisa Buckingham:

How long will it take to set up the festival ice rink?

The Winter Wonderland Ice Rink build started on Thursday and takes a week.

It will be ready for the festival opening.

Queenstown's version of Dancing on Ice will see ice skaters from the Queenstown Ice Skating Club paired with members of the community at two performances.

The ice rink will also host two special Disney characters during the Community Carnival on June 29.

How long has this year's festival been in the making?

Since July last year [we've been working on it]. As soon as it's over we start planning for the next one.

How much sleep are you getting at the moment?

Not as much as I would like - but more than I will get next week and the one after.

What are you looking forward to most at the festival?

The Opening Party and Fireworks are always a favourite of mine. Also I'm looking forward to the Inspiring Winter Celebrations and Pecha Kucha.

What are your top tips for festival goers?

Dress up warm, hydrate, gather your family and friends and take in as many [events] as you can - over two-thirds are free.
