More than $136,000 of Government funding has been granted to help fix four Otago trails damaged by bad weather.

Part of the funding confirmed yesterday will help reinstate a section of the Queenstown Trail badly damaged by heavy rain earlier this year.

The Queenstown Trails Trust will top up a $58,774 grant, from the Government's ''Maintaining the Quality of Great Rides Fund'', to enable repair work to begin soon.

Trust chief executive Mandy Kennedy said the section of the Twin Rivers Trail, between Glenda Dr and the Wakatipu Gun Club, had been closed since February.

After yesterday's announcement the trust would speak to the Queenstown Lakes District Council about starting repair work, Mrs Kennedy said.

The trust is dedicated to developing a 120km network of public trails around the Wakatipu.

Waitaki's Alps 2 Ocean Trail, run by the Waitaki Trust, will receive $66,575 for safety barriers, bridge widening and surface work.

The Central Trails Trust received $10,744 for safety barriers on the Roxburgh Gorge Trail and storm repairs on the Clutha Gold Trail.

The fund is available only for trails which are part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail and is designed to assist with remedial work after weather-related events.

Other funding recipients were the Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust ($165,910); Tasman District Council ($67,500); and the Motu Trails Charitable Trust ($25,134).
