Woman knocked out amid weekend violence

Queenstown police were kept busy over the weekend with a number of separate punch-ups - one of which resulted in a female being knocked out.

The incident on Saturday evening started when a 35-year-old man approached a 21-year old man outside Chico's bar at 11.40pm.

Sergeant Steve Watt said the younger man's girlfriend stepped in between the pair and was subsequently punched and knocked out.

"She was on the ground for some time."

The 35-year-old faces two charges - male assault on a female and common assault.

Two men also face assault charges following another incident on Woodstock Road in the resort.

Sgt Watt explained two men went to a birthday party at the Woodstock address after drinking in town. One of the men got into a disagreement with another man and his mate while sitting on the couch.

A punch-up followed both inside and out with the other man claiming he was punched in the head with a bottle. Another bottle was thrown outside the property before the two late arrivals ran away from the scene. Two men, 34 and 25, one from each party face common assault charges.

Violence continued on Sunday morning when an Invercargill man was arrested for disorder at 3am. The 19-year-old approached police on Church Street, became abusive and refused to tame his behaviour.

An altercation between a doorman and a 24-year-old tourist led to a further arrest.

Sgt Watt said the tourist was walking up Shotover Street with a glass in his hand. When the doorman attempted to take it off him punches were thrown. The 24-year-old then grabbed a bottle and threw it at him - hitting the doorman on the side of the head.

The assailant was who staying at a backpackers in town was restrained until police arrived at the scene. He is charged with assault with a weapon.
